N. Yolanda Burwell
Senior Fellow, North Carolina Rural Economic Development Center
N. Yolanda Burwell is a Senior Fellow with North Carolina Rural Economic Development Center where she is looking at barriers and incentives around economic opportunities. Prior to this position she taught social work for 25 years in undergraduate programs in Louisiana and North Carolina. Her research interests and publications are on social welfare history in African American communities and early female leaders and organizations. She has been a scholar-in-residence at five schools/departments of social work to speak on social work history and African American contributions. In addition to research and teaching, she has conducted numerous successful trainings and consultancies on team-working, cultural competence, conflict resolution and communication. Yolanda is a serious collector of African American postcards and photography books. She received her Ph. D. from Cornell University in 1982. She was awarded her MSW from Washington University in 1974 and her BSW from NC A&T State University in 1972.

Karen McNeil-Miller

“Substance, Saavy, and Style: Three Requirements for Today's Woman”
Karen will engage with us around three characteristics that should be a part of any and every woman’s life resume. Using both research, as well as personal stories from the audience members, she’ll illustrate the role that having substance, savvy, and style can play in defining our personal success.
Karen McNeil-Miller is the President of the Kate B. Reynolds Charitable Trust in Winston-Salem, NC. Founded in 1947, KBR’s mission is to improve the quality of life and the quality of health for financially needy North Carolians. Specifically, the Trust addresses social and human need issues within Forsyth County through its Poor and Needy Division and health and medical needs across the state through the Healthcare Division.
Prior to joining KBR, Karen spent sixteen years with the Center for Creative Leadership, an international leadership development and research, non-profit organization headquartered in Greensboro, NC. While there she developed expertise in individual and organizational leadership development, succession planning, team building, diversity, executive coaching, leading change and transitions, and strategic thinking. Karen’s trained executives from the world’s major companies in twenty-four countries.
Karen is a former special education teacher and Head of the Piedmont School, an independent school for children with learning differences. She has her undergrad and master’s degree from UNCG and her doctorate from Vanderbilt University.
Karen is a native North Carolinian, has been married to Steve for over twenty years, and has two children, Lindsey and William.
