Joy E. Ingram is currently Assistant to the Director of Admissions and Records at Pellissippi State Technical Community College. Ingram, a former Associate Professor of History, has taught on the community college level for over 18 years. Getting her start at a community college, she later returned to that same system to teach the discipline she loves so well- American History. She also developed and taught the survey of African-American History. Teaching on a predominately white campus for all of her tenure has brought its own unique set of challenges. Many of the challenges resulted from preconceived and stereotypical attitudes that students had about their professor and their fellow classmates. However, the lessons learned from these challenges have been well worth the trials. One such lesson was how to help students from diverse cultural and ethnic backgrounds relate to one another. It was in the context of the classroom that Ingram first began to use tools and teaching methods for "cross cultural training" and to help expose and understand stereotypical attitudes.
