Born in Springfield, Illinois, Mary grew up on a farm 60 miles south of there. A former VISTA volunteer with a secretarial and insurance background, Mary met FOCIS (Federation Of Communities In Service) members in Knoxville in 1969 and began volunteering in Clairfield, TN. Mary later moved to Clairfield and received the Ford Leadership Development Award to help establish the legal services program there and train numerous paralegals throughout the region.
Since 1978, Mary has lived in Cherokee, NC and the Qualla Community, where she was a founding member of many social services programs related to domestic violence, conflict resolution, higher education and chaplaincy program. Mary is currently employed by the Catholic Diocese of Charlotte as Regional Faith Formation Consultant and Native American Multi-Cultural Worker in the seven western counties of North Carolina
